These are the two folders most people end up choosing between. The XP4 is the cheapest folding e-bike anyone should actually buy, and the Fold 1 Plus is what you get when you spend fifty percent more. The gap between them is real, but it is not where most reviews say it is.

Where the $500 goes

The Fold 1 Plus carries 450 lb versus 330 lb, holds a bigger battery, and rides noticeably better on rough pavement. It is also six pounds lighter, which matters more than it sounds when you are lifting a folded bike into a car trunk. The XP4 gives up range and payload but nothing important about how it rides on flat ground.

Where they are the same

Both do 28 mph. Both fold. Both come from direct-to-consumer brands with no dealer network, meaning you assemble it yourself and any warranty work happens by mail. If you are picturing a bike shop fixing this for you, neither of these is your bike.

Who should buy which

Buy the XP4 if the bike lives in an apartment and mostly does short flat trips, or if $999 is genuinely the ceiling. Buy the Fold 1 Plus if you are carrying groceries, riding hills, or lifting it regularly — the payload and the weight difference are what you will notice a year in, not the spec sheet.
