Aventon has discontinued the Level 3 and replaced it with the Level 4 REC, which lands at exactly the Trek FX 1+’s price: $1,999. That makes this comparison cleaner than it used to be. You are not choosing between a cheap bike and an expensive one. You are choosing how you want to own a bike. Specs are from both brands’ own product pages, checked October 15, 2026.

The Level 4 REC has a 750W hub motor with 80 N·m of torque and a torque sensor. Its battery is 733Wh against the Trek’s 540Wh, and it claims 75 miles of range against 50. It ships as a Class 2 bike and can be switched to Class 3, which gets you pedal assist up to 28 mph, where the Trek stops at 20. It has a throttle, which the Trek does not. It also adds a front suspension fork, a suspension seatpost, fenders, a rack, and 4G GPS tracking with app control.
Weight and a bike shop. The FX 1+ weighs 50 lb against the Level 4 REC’s 68.5 lb. That 18.5 lb difference decides whether you can carry the bike up stairs or lift it onto a car rack, and it is why the Trek rides more like a normal bicycle with the motor off. It is also sold, built and serviced by a Trek dealer, so a warranty problem means a drive to the shop, not a box and a shipping label.
Buy the Level 4 REC if you want the most bike for $1,999, ride longer distances, or want a throttle and theft tracking, and you are comfortable doing basic maintenance. Buy the Trek if the bike has to be carried, you have never worked on a bike, or you want a shop that knows you when something goes wrong. Aventon also sells through some dealers, so check for one near you before assuming you are on your own.
